How do you build one of the world's largest private equity firms from scratch?

On My First Million, David Rubenstein explains how he went from working in the White House to co-founding The Carlyle Group in 1987.

Starting With $5 Million

At age 37, Rubenstein raised $5 million from four investors to launch Carlyle.

The company initially struggled with limited cash, little credibility, and the constant pressure of meeting payroll.

Rather than raising huge investment funds immediately, Carlyle started by financing individual deals.

Over time, the firm expanded into buyouts, real estate, credit, and international investments.

Rubenstein says Carlyle eventually grew to manage approximately $500 billion in assets.

The Secret: Hiring Smarter People

Rubenstein admits he wasn't the strongest investment expert.

Instead, he recruited experienced partners who understood finance while he focused on raising capital, building relationships, and attracting talent.

He also brought influential former government officials into the firm, helping Carlyle open doors that competitors couldn't.

The $14 Billion Amazon Mistake

Rubenstein recalls an early opportunity to acquire a significant stake in Jeff Bezos's startup.

Carlyle initially passed, later acquired some Amazon shares, and sold them around the company's IPO.

He estimates those shares could eventually have been worth approximately $14 billion if retained.

Business Lesson

Build around your strengths and surround yourself with people who complement them.

Rubenstein's story shows how persistence, strategic hiring, and relationships can help a small company compete with established giants.
