WOMEN'S DIGITAL MEDIA EMPIRE
Updated: Jan 4

THE UNLIKELY CO-FOUNDERS
Refinery29 wasn’t born in a boardroom—it was sparked by two creative rebels, Christine Barbarac and Piera Gelardi, who met at the indie fashion bible City Magazine. Christine mentored Piera, and both learned to think bigger than glossy pages. When Piera began casually advising Philipp and Justin on a wild new digital fashion concept in 2004, she looped Christine in “for a woman’s perspective.” That meeting changed everything. Christine felt the lightning: this wasn’t a side gig—this was the future. She called back and said, “Not a consultant. A partner.” Piera jumped with her. Four founders, one mission.
BUILDING IN THE INTERNET’S WILD WEST
Back then, there was no Twitter, no roadmap, and brands didn’t believe people would shop online. That skepticism became a gift: Refinery29 had the freedom to experiment, test ideas, and invent a whole new kind of women-first media without constant competition breathing down their necks.

CONTENT WITH A PULSE
Their creative north star? Serve real humans. Headlines that hook, stories that matter, and content that makes readers feel seen—whether it’s a deeply reported essay or a vulnerable Google search moment. Quality, to them, means purpose + resonance + impact.
THE TAKEAWAY FOR FOUNDERS
Trust the gut-tug. Start with what’s missing, stay focused, take smart risks, and build a team that already loves the mission. That’s how you turn a hunch into a movement.
