WHAT DO CONSULTANTS REALLY EARN? IT DEPENDS ON THIS ONE THING…

Consulting income isn’t a fixed number—it’s a sliding scale driven by what you solve and how you price it. The story breaks consulting fees into three core models, each a rung on the earning ladder.

1) THE HOURLY STARTING LINE

Most beginners charge by the hour. Your rate rises or falls with supply, demand, and how “commodity” your skill feels. That could mean $20/hr for general work—or $1,000+/hr when your expertise is rare and high-stakes.

2) THE PROJECT POWER PLAY

Next comes the project fee: a flat price for a defined outcome. Here, specialization is king. The more niche and expert you are, the more you can charge because clients pay for results, not minutes.

3) THE RETAINER ROCKET

Retainers turn one-off gigs into recurring revenue. You set a monthly fee based on ongoing workload—creating stability and scaling your income beyond hours.

BONUS LEVEL: PERFORMANCE & ROYALTIES

To truly “uplevel,” blend retainers with performance pay—like a percentage of sales or a success kicker. Now you earn alongside the value you create.

THE GOLDEN RULE

You’re compensated in proportion to the size of the problem you solve. Create $10K in value? Charging $1K feels like a no-brainer. Bigger problems = bigger paydays.
